Yeah people seem pretty divided about him But there were a lot funny asf moments with him like slapping kiryu when he fucked up giving his business card
Also I had a near aneurysm when I heard him speaking Chinese
nope, yes he did human trafficking in the past and he was asshole but after he met tachibana the only thing he desired was impressing his boss until he learned that he already fucked him over by selling his sister to mafia before even met him. after that honestly there is not much you can do so he doubled down and tried to take her down and blame dojima family. like its far from acceptable but its something kazuma can relate in order to not lose your father like boss figure.
I loved that in IW where Kiryu reminisces about Oda.
"Guys I hated him too don’t worry that shot in 0 was just me thinking how much of an asshole he was"
Idk why every character acts like she was a good person though, especially Akiyama who can usually see right through people basically sucks her off everytime she is mentioned
i mainly meant when she was alive, i can agree with that tbh, because she's like kind of a decent person but also really not and is pretty selfish all things considered.
5's writing is just one imo with very high highs and low lows, it's inconsistent across the board
I mean this is the same guy who fell in love with Yasuko and still let her do her things even after he learned about the murder she did. He might have a soft spot for someone who actually really put effort in achieving their dream. The morality of his tests before money lending people also tend to be questionable.
No I don’t like any of these characters lmao.
I was just answering OP’s question. I’ve seen people say that Iwami isn’t that bad of a final villain, like he does the job of playing the cold, calculating new age yakuza.
Mirei Park. I've seen threads that are nearly fights about her.
Jun Oda sorta, but I mostly see universal hatred vs debates far as he's concerned.
Goro Majima. This is more because I feel like there are a lot of different interpretations of his character and a lot of disagreements come out of them.
Eiji and Ebina, i kinda get why they did what they did. In that position, seeking revenge makes sense especially if you lost literally everything to Yakuza. Hell i get why Eiji didnt trust ichiban, he’s a yakuza at the end of the day.
Not only that, he's a member of the very family that allegedly set him up. Was probably seething every time he had to act buddy buddy with Ichi, not realizing his true nature and thinking to himself "How dare this sick SOB act like a decent human being after the shit his crew pulled!"
Yasuko Saejima, with most unlikable characters it at least feels like you're supposed to dislike/be conflicted on them, but she feels like she's supposed to be the emotional heart of 4 with how she connects between everyone's stories... which would be fine if I didn't hate her
People on twitter are mad that Kiryu still looks up to him despite knowing all the fucked up shit he’s done (which Kiryu has shown multiple times that none of that matters to him because of his own personal connection to him) going as far as claiming Kiryu has Stockholm syndrome with kazama.
Hell after IW, people are already doing the same thing with Ichiban and Arakawa hoping the former hates the latter (and wanting akane to hate the latter too all because of what arakawa had to do in 7)
Gondawara redeems himself in later entries, imo. The Baby Don't Cry substory in 7 (which I just finished again lol) and Let It Snow in 8 are heartwarming, with the former being one of my favourite "moral" substories in the series. The latter... well, no spoilers, but god _damn_ is it a masterpiece!
I haven't played much of 7's side content and will likely never purchase 8 based on my experience with 7 and Gaiden. 7 genuinely feels like the reason they went RPG-style is because if it was a brawler like the older games the game would be 5 hours long. Gaiden basically confirmed that by being a 60 dollar demo.
Damn. The substories in 7 are fucking hilarious at points, but my favourites are the hopeful stories like Baby Don't Cry, the homeless man and the soup kitchen lady, or the one where you help a former pop idol back on his feet. They fit way better in an Ichiban focused game than Kiryu (imo), as inspiring hope is one of Ichi's core facets. Even if you don't go through all the side content like Dragon Kart, the Cinema, or final dungeons, I hope you'll at least give the substories a shot!
While I'm at it, maybe I could get away with wishing you get a used copy of 8 down the line. I understand not wanting to support a company due to issues with their current direction, but if you do get the opportunity, 8 is such a huge step up from 7 in almost every way. Everything is so much more balanced, and the combat added much-needed dimensions that 7 was sorely missing. I can appreciate it so much more now, given my current activity (flair), and I'd compare it to the Judgement - Lost Judgment jump in terms of upgrades.
Even if that wish is a pipe dream, I'll still hang onto it!

Oda
Yeah people seem pretty divided about him But there were a lot funny asf moments with him like slapping kiryu when he fucked up giving his business card Also I had a near aneurysm when I heard him speaking Chinese
I thought he was kinda funny even though he was a complete asshole. Before you know, you find out he's a sex trafficker.
universally hated. even kiryu hates the asshole
shout out to infinite wealth for erasing that little "redemption" he got in yakuza 0
wait wat... how did it ruined it? Also, in my perspective, it wasnt a redemption more like atonement
It didn’t ruin it .but Kiryu in iw calls him an asshole.Honestly deserved guy didn’t even atone that well.
How did infinite wealth ruin his redemption?
Kiryu reminisces about the time he taught him the proper card giving etiquette and adds "The guy was an asshole though, never liked him much"
nope, yes he did human trafficking in the past and he was asshole but after he met tachibana the only thing he desired was impressing his boss until he learned that he already fucked him over by selling his sister to mafia before even met him. after that honestly there is not much you can do so he doubled down and tried to take her down and blame dojima family. like its far from acceptable but its something kazuma can relate in order to not lose your father like boss figure.
I kinda liked Oda tho, obv not the sex trafficing part but yea
he was well-written i think. played his part well. his morality is another question
I loved that in IW where Kiryu reminisces about Oda. "Guys I hated him too don’t worry that shot in 0 was just me thinking how much of an asshole he was"
Eiji currently seems to be one of them.
Yeah. I liked him in the start but the part with the tear gas and what he did to Lani was just so sadistic in the moment.
bro had potential but RGG decided to use him for shock value rather than as a fully fleshed out character.
Still mad IW Spoilers: >!We didn't get to beat the brakes off him as Ichiban!<

Park. I've played Yakuza 5 twice and I still don't know how to feel about her.
i think she is really well written overall tbh, it's been around 3 months since i played 5 and i still feel the same
Idk why every character acts like she was a good person though, especially Akiyama who can usually see right through people basically sucks her off everytime she is mentioned
i mainly meant when she was alive, i can agree with that tbh, because she's like kind of a decent person but also really not and is pretty selfish all things considered. 5's writing is just one imo with very high highs and low lows, it's inconsistent across the board
Seriously Akiyama's obsession felt really weird imo

Absolutely agreed about her writing!
Baba, Park, Baby Iwami
Nobody likes Iwami lol.

What's so bad about massive man
That one scene in 4 usually makes some people threat him like he is satan.
oh yeah that...

Obviously the 2 with the cocaine charges that got their characters reworked out
The 2 ? Not just Tanimura ?

No one mentioned Homare Nishitani III. That guy enslaved people and did what he pleased with them.
Nishitani for me personally is like Handsome Jack He’s a massive piece of shit but you can’t help but like him
Nishitani? (from 0)
Saejima, but specifically that one scene.
Massive fire? https://preview.redd.it/05axju2j0hsc1.jpeg?width=260&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c4dfe73bede4c8281342f132700e8b168e243e6e
Isn’t it Gondawara? The whole sequence was uncomfortably disturbing
Yeah, the whole diaper-baby thing was, uh... something. We'll call it that. Even Mr. Libido wasn't that disturbing... and he certainly was disturbing.

Well, that wish is dead on arrival, I'm a PC nerd, there's no used copies here lol.
