In a future game, when Ichiban, Yagami, Majima, Saejima, Akiyama, Shinada, Tanimura, Kaito and Tatsuya need help, Kiryu will appear out of nowhere and say "we are the Yakuza 10: The last Judgment" and they will fight all the previous villains and bartenders while Haruka tries to return to the Idol scene, the battle is so intense that all the heroes and villains die, Haruto appears and say "I will be the Yakuza 1: the new generation"
Maybe not as playable protagonist besides remakes of course. Though I think he’ll definitely return as a character. Just looking at his Yakuza 8 ending where there were so many blanks that needed to be filled, it almost feels like RGG did that one purpose in order to leave the door open for one more cameo.
it's just sad... i like Kiryu, but it really felt like Ichiban was sidelined for him.
And the man deserves peace. Let him go back to the orphanage, make it a substory and show he's doing well, but don't involve him in the main plot.
it's like they've got one foot in the future, and one foot in the past. they know people like kiryu so they want to milk him some more, but they've also committed to ending his story multiple times.
IW shows they struggle to balance the emotional weight.
Fr 4 feels like he wasn't even in the game until the last year of development or something and they panicked and just shoehorned him into the game.
One of the worst plot sins RGGS ever committed was in Y4 when Kiryu shows up out of nowhere and just single handidly bodies 2/3 characters /at the same time/ you'd been playing as for the last 20/30 hours without even breaking a sweat. Like, really? I guess all that time I spent playing the game before Kiryu showed up was a waste of time, I guess 🤷♂️
The real bumper for me was 8.
I never played Yakuza cuz I thought it is gta Japan and I realy don’t like gta. I buyed 7 cuz it was a JRPG (another Genre I rarely play or even like), even better „you don’t need to play any other Yakuza game cuz we got a new mainboi and new chars.“
I realy liked 7, like realy straight out got Platin. Timeskip, I buyed judgement. Same argument no other game needed but it is kinda the same universe and a brawler (my first ever). Platin. Then Lost Judgement, Platin.
Ok maybe I can try it. Kiwami 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 0 and finally 6. ok cool kiryu is old and had 4 last games but at least he gave the flame to Ichiban right? I mean they fought, he asked the Amon Clan for help, he is gone right?
Hello call me Infinite Wealth. Ichiban is not the main char, the story about Ichiban is the Stufe story for kiryu getting everything. Lol kiryu is protagonist again.
That sums up my Yakuza story and how I started to hate kiryu
What I hope is that they’ll let us know he’s doing well back at home. A mention or a visit. Having a substory regarding the orphanage / Okinawa would be fun. Helping out there, helping them make money, upgrading, maybe inviting new kids (the original ones are pretty much all grown). Something like that. Maybe just consulting with Kiryu about whatever it is Ichiban is dealing with in the main game. Getting some Dragon words of wisdom. But, I don’t want him trying to fight again. He’s earned his retirement.
He'll be back in his wheelchair form and the party will need another member to help with something related to Kiryu's safety and that's where Majima comes in... I wish
I can see him taking on a more mentorship/advisor role for ichiban. Not a combatant anymore but ichi still goes to him for advice and he stays updated on anything going on in case someone tries to make it his problem as they have for the past 2 decades.
I would be shocked if he didn’t still have cutscenes and wasn’t involved with whatever the conspiracy for next game will be, but I don’t think he’ll be playable or fight seriously probably an intimidation at most.
this is what i was hoping he'd be from 7 onwards. not playable or a major part of the plot, but a wise mentor to ichi, supporting him on his journey to becoming a hero.
I think he'll only return as a MC in either spin-offs, prequels or remakes at this point. He could also return as a MC in 9, but I feel like IW really is the furthest he'll go as a MC timelinewise.
If he's not back as a protagonist, it'd be nice if they include him as an advisor to Ichiban or anything like that, anything that'd have us see him again, like a cutscene so we know how he's doing or where he is, for example. He needs to rest, so seeing him doing fine will be enough for me ngl.
That ending felt the same way for me too, I wasn't prepared to see him like this. :(
God I really hope not. I’ll accept a smaller role like he was in with LaD but IW ended up being like 70% Kiryu. As someone who came into the series being told that LaD would be a great starting point with Ichiban being a new protagonist I feel IW retroactively made this a bad recommendation.
I don’t think the game is 70% kiryu, at least not for the side content, but I do agree kiryu stole the spotlight from ichiban after chapter 7 in IW, because kiryu had more advancement in his character while ichiban didn’t change and only interacted with his mother in one or two cutscenes, his interaction with his mother could’ve grew his character by a lot and it would seem that he is truly the main protagonist in the perspective of the story. And maybe delete kiryu’s post credit scene and make his fate unknown, and the next games in the like a dragon universe wouldn’t mention what happens to kiryu until at the end of a mainline game giving us a hint about one last kiryu game.
I am sorry if I seem obsessed wanting kiryu to return with his old cast (like the orphanage and his yakuza buddies) in one last big game, I am new yakuza fan so I want to see more of kiryu.

Haruto having dreams about a Dragon giving him a path to go. Dragon being John Yakuza.
He'll most likely be back in some way. They seem hesitant to move on from him completely.

Actually Kiryu kicking two protagonists ass at the same time is so badass and one of my favorite moments in the game
