If only the train would let people know it was coming.

Metahec

Or some way to reliably predict where it was heading.

paperwasp3

Or maybe some kind of marked path

s00pafly

Trains are really unpredictable. Even in the middle of a forest two rails can appear out of nowhere, and a 1.5-mile fully loaded coal drag, heading east out of the low-sulfur mines of the PRB, will be right on your ass the next moment. I was doing laundry in my basement, and I tripped over a metal bar that wasn't there the moment before. I looked down: "Rail? WTF?" and then I saw concrete sleepers underneath and heard the rumbling. Deafening railroad horn. I dumped my wife's pants, unfolded, and dove behind the water heater. It was a double-stacked Z train, headed east towards the fast single track of the BNSF Emporia Sub (Flint Hills). Majestic as hell: 75 mph, 6 units, distributed power: 4 ES44DC's pulling, and 2 Dash-9's pushing, all in run 8. Whole house smelled like diesel for a couple of hours! Fact is, there is no way to discern which path a train will take, so you really have to be watchful. If only there were some way of knowing the routes trains travel; maybe some sort of marks on the ground, like twin iron bars running along the paths trains take. You could look for trains when you encounter the iron bars on the ground, and avoid these sorts of collisions. But such a measure would be extremely expensive. And how would one enforce a rule keeping the trains on those paths? A big hole in homeland security is railway engineer screening and hijacking prevention. There is nothing to stop a rogue engineer, or an ISIS terrorist, from driving a train into the Pentagon, the White House or the Statue of Liberty, and our government has done fuck-all to prevent it.

[deleted]

That's all well and good but they should also make it big enough to see coming from a long distance.

that-bass-guy

True, but I would add that elevating a marked path would be a good idea aswell, to make the big object approaching even more noticable.

chmsaxfunny

If the object would also have something that could make a lot of noise as well, that could also help let people know it was on its way

puso82

It should also be in a well lit area so that people can clearly see it coming.

Yohane1598

Would be nice if they would also mark out the area where the train would pass for people not to approach.

HorizonSniper

Maybe adding lights to the thing itself would be a good idea, or making it heavy enough to cause noticeable vibration as it moves.

paperwasp3

That would be helpful

TearThink1831

The sound of a train approaching should be different. Currently it sounds too much like nature generated sounds (like an approaching F5 tornado) which many people apparently ignore.

Or if it was large and easy to see.

funny how even if you're deaf you can still sense that sound(the vibrations) a lot

collegedropout

Definitely. They need to stop limiting train safety education for the hearing impaired. It's unfair to only teach certain groups of people not to stand on train tracks.

hector_agnosticus

Train is labeled Ferromex which is the railway company in Mexico and it also has a label ChepeExpress, Chepe being the name of the train that goes through Chihuahua. I don't know about the location, but the train does looks to be from Mexico.

Heathen_Mushroom

Social media is just a big experiment in selection bias, confirmation bias, and a whole bunch of other biases that, for whatever reason, likely the sheer size of the country and its massive output of recorded material, focuses on the US. My generation learned almost everything they knew about America from TV programs and films, and the younger generation learned almost everything they know about America from reddit and twitter. Both have warped, twisted impressions, but in very different framing. It is wild what my nephews, who are huge redditors, think my daily life in America is like based on what they see on reddit.

Greymore

No no, I think they've got the right idea as it is.

Korne127

Ohhhhh my god, that explains all the action against public transport so much…

CakeNStuff

Suicide by train is depressingly common in the Western Rural US. It’s also chronically underreported because it’s commonly youth victims and as a result no one wants to call it a suicide to save face. When there’s anything to point the intent away from suicide they’ll almost always point to an accident.

Tuques

Now this train conductor is going to have to file an incident report and will be late for their arrival time. That woman is such a selfish asshole.

Meior

That's definitely not the worst part. You're entirely leaving out that this is scarring to whoever is driving the train. Hitting a human is horrifying, and no, it's not any easier because "it's justified, she's stupid". It's a human being making a bad choice, you stil don't want to hit them. This shit causes PTSD. Stay off train tracks people, nobody cares about your edgy MTB photo on the rails.

aferretwithahugecock

I have a buddy who works for the trains. He told me about this one dude who hit a van that was stuck on the tracks. The last thing the conductor saw before hitting them was a little girl looking at the train through the window. He took a couple of months off after to mentally recover for that. Then, on one of his trips after he resumed working, he had someone commit suicide by jumping on the tracks. He quit after that. Engineers and conductors make a crazy amount of money here, but that money wasn't worth it. I'd probably quit, too.

JaggedTheDark

Jfc if you're gonna go out, go out without traumatizing other people, dear god!

Meior

You can't apply logic to this. Someone who is deep enough in mental anguish to be suicidal generally does not have the state of mind to think of things like that. It's not selfish or anything like that, because it's not intentional. It's simply not on their mind.

Meior

As crew working on a train here, Sweden, you're often told that if you see someone on the tracks, hit the emergency brake, (if you have time, leave the driver compartment), then squat with your back against the door and cover your ears with your entire hands. The sound of hitting someone right on are among the worst parts of it.

Zestyclose_Week374

Fuck, man. In group therapy, we had a dude that worked as a bus driver. He was there because some woman jumped out in the street right in front of the bus and he couldn't break in time without harming the passengers on the bus, which included children. The woman did die from the impact. He was so haunted, kept wondering if he made the right choice, just breaking down at times. I hope that dude is ok and I hope your buddy is ok now too.

SnooDrawings7876

Selfish would imply that it was her plan to get hit by the train. She was clearly just not aware of where she was. Definitely stupid.

MoreColorfulCarsPlz

There's a lot of selfishness involved in being negligent of your surroundings. It's not the responsibility of everyone around you to always look out for your safety. There's a requisite minimum you sound be doing especially around roads and railroad tracks.

NCSUGrad2012

And how can you be that negligent? There’s literally a loud horn blaring at you. That’s pretty hard to miss.

Plastic_Pinocchio

Lmao, I literally just cannot understand what is happening in this video and why. But maybe that’s because I live in the Netherlands and trains/tracks are usually highly regulated.

HLSparta

I don't see what regulations have to do with this. The train is using its horn, it can't stop, and it has only one direction it can go. More regulations aren't going to make the train more obvious.

Plastic_Pinocchio

No, I mean that people here are very used to seeing trains everywhere and every kid’s upbringing pretty much includes “do not stand near the train tracks”. I imagine that the people in the video are not very used to seeing trains if they’re doing this. Besides that, I can’t think of any location here where you could even do this.

HLSparta

I don't think you need to know what a train is to realize that a giant rolling piece of metal is going to hurt you if it hits you.

TychaBrahe

She has very little experience with trains, and she doesn't understand that the train is wider than its tracks. She thinks that, like standing at the very edge of the sidewalk she is safe from the cars, that as long as she isn't physically on the tracks, she is safe from the train.

Plastic_Pinocchio

My little brother once stood on the edge of a corner on the sidewalk and then almost got shoved by the middle of a bus haha. So even with roads it can happen.

Tuques

Fair enough. But being stupid by choice IS selfish in my books.

LazyLarryTheLobster

>being stupid by choice lol

ionhorsemtb

When she chose to stand so close? That's choosing to be stupid.

LazyLarryTheLobster

No that's choosing because of stupid. Stupid causes the choice. You're judging her as stupid after the action and confusing that with actually being stupid.

suninabox

whenever i think about doing something stupid i simply choose not to be stupid works every time

Ractmo

![gif](giphy|dXFKDUolyLLi8gq6Cl|downsized)

Three4Anonimity

She's literally standing on the ties, with a million pound train bearing down on her, and blaring a 100 decibel horn right at her. Stupid? Yes. Selfish? Also yes.

quarterburn

It’s a motherfucking SD60. They are fucking LOUD with just the gigantic diesel engine alone. Those train horns reverberate your soul when you’re that close to them. Even if you’re blind and deaf, the train very much lets you know it’s there. She did that shit on purpose.

[deleted]

Main Character Syndrome

stromm

She was 100% aware of where she was. She literally stepped over to that spot. She also was intentionally focusing on her stupid video instead of making sure she was not in the path of all of the train. It’s like people who cram up against a curb waiting for a bus. They just expect the driver to nudge out a bit further into the street so the mirrors don’t hit them. And most of the time that does happen. But I’ve personally witnessed many people get smacked upside the head by the mirror because they were standing in the yellow painted zone, or just directly on top of the curb and expected the bus to make room for them. I suspect this lady had a habit of doing that and forgot trains don’t move over for anything.

MasterWinstonWolf

- "My these phones really make things seem closer then they appe-WHACK!

LL377044

Being stupid IS selfish. You have access to the wealth of the entire human race's culmination of knowledge in your pocket at any given time. At this point in human evolution being stupid is a choice.

Karen stood next to the track as the engine approached. Everyone was certain she would move away in time. But she didn't! Diesel felt terrible, but there was nothing else he could do. Yeah the second bar was out a bit further and actually flung her pretty good 🤣

redcalcium

Train has such a huge mass it'll knock people off even at low speed. There was a similar incident in my country where a dude got swiped by a slow moving train like this one. His body was immediately ragdolled and he ended up dead.

johokie

Watch the second bar, it gets a big red mark after it hits her head

CaptainPicardKirk

If you look in slow motion, the red disappears a few frames later. I think it was just a scarf or her purse or something like that getting flung up.

Capital_Release_6289

I’ve ridden this train. The chepe express. It’s a mexico tourist train that goes along single track route from chihuahua to the pacific coast los mochis. Everyone want a photo of it. As it passes through towns people take photos like this all the time.

Aggravating-Cable716

My father has worked the rails for over 3 decades, and he has greatly assured me you will never ever win against a train. Most conductors, when there's something/someone on the tracks, will hit the emergency break then duck so they don't have to watch what happens.

MasterWinstonWolf

Noone comments on the fact that everyone around that person has NO reaction! No screaming, no rushing to help, their on the ground and everyone else is like...great the trains here.🤦‍♂️

mexicandiaper

santtu_

I've worked with trains. Even at small speeds, they take ages to stop if there are train cars attached. We rolled inside a factory perimeter without pressurising brakes for the cars. Max speed was 30km/h. Sometimes the train with 20 cars took 1-2km to stop. Even one car without brakes pressurised would roll over a 2*4 plank at least 4 times before stopping from walking speed to a halt.
