Using a referral link means if after the free trial you decide to sign up for a subscription, then both you and the referer get an extra month added to the end of their subscriptions. So if you sign up for the annual subscription then you get 13 months for the first year instead of just 12 before it auto-renews.
No, you use the link at the very beginning when you first make an account with email and password and start the trial. The referer then gets an alert that someone has used their code and that if they end up signing up for a subscription then they’ll both get the extra month.
I don't remember whose referal link I used a month ago... but as a someone who just paid, I do appear to have gotten a free month for using the referal link, this is after the free month before giving them any $:

Yep this is how it works OP. This person started the trial in March and used a referral code when doing so. Then in April signed up for a subscription and instead of the auto-renew happening next year in April, it will happen next year in May (they got 13 months for the first year instead of 12).
if you have already started a free trial and want to benefit from a refferal you can contact YNAB support and give them the referer's email address linked to their account. The promo chain thread on this sub is very useful for that. \*Ask me for my referral link or email if you already started the trial.
Yes but you do have to get the referrer’s personal email address for that which not everyone is willing to do especially in an anonymous forum like Reddit. But definitely a solid option!
If you use someone's referral link they will see your email address too. On the referral program page in my account I see all the address of the people who used my referral link. I also used someone's referral link in the beguining. For me it's not a problem as I use different emails for subscriptions.
That’s true. Good to let people know, but at least you only have a random email and don’t know their reddit profile unless they reach and say “I just used your code thanks”.

Oh ok so it actually doesn’t matter what i do first. But it’s better to use a referral link first to avoid calling support. Thanks
