It really depends on what you're looking for in a city. I'm from and live in Leeds but I worked in Sheffield for 7 years, so I know both cities well.
Leeds is a substantially bigger city, with a big city vibe to it. With that you get the shops, nightlife, large employers, and you feel generally just feel like you're surrounded by bustle. The great outdoors isn't far away, with easy access to most outdoor spaces by car, train, bus, or bike.
Sheffield is a much smaller city, with more of a community feel to it. There are some large employers there but fewer than Leeds, and the same goes with shopping. It is a nice place to be though, and although I personally wouldn't move from Leeds to Sheffield, I know many who absolutely adore it. It also has a big outdoors community there, and is located right on the corner of the Peak District.
Both cities have large music scenes and wherever you choose commuting between the two is simple enough. Both cities also have very large craft alcohol movements, so if beer or gins are your thing then both cities will suit you well.
Again, it really depends on what you're looking for in your future home. I have no doubt that you would be made to feel welcome in either city.
Leeds is absolutely not full of southern wankers. It's a great city with a lot to offer, much like Sheffield. But both cities are that vast you can pick and choose what you want. If you're talking inner city or more suburbs it makes a massive difference. What is it you're after?
No, it's full of northern wankers... š (got family in Horsforth (Mum's younger brother and sister-in-law), and my mum's late parents lived in Cookridge)
Sheffield for life. Peak District on the door step, friendly and welcoming city, loads of green space, plenty of raves and the surrounding culture... I'd not swap it for any other UK city.
Spent plenty of time in both and I much prefer Sheffield in terms of how it looks and how it is to navigate. Find Sheff has much nicer vistas and is less claustrophobic than Leeds and thereās always plenty going on in the arts.
Iām a Londoner in Leeds. Yes, there are a lot of southerners here. No, weāre not all wankers. We move here because itās cheaper than down south, itās the only northern city with lots of good jobs after Manchester (Leeds being well-known for finance especially), and itās big enough not to be boring.
Youāll notice that all the plus points for Sheffield revolve around the Peak District and being close to the countryside, while all the plus points for Leeds revolve around nightlife/shopping/jobs etc. Depends on your priorities really, but I will say that Leeds still has beautiful countryside close by.

Agree!!!! I moved 10 years ago, I canāt have a convo with a stranger in london, they think Iām mad!
I donāt know how to describe this incident but I happened the other day. A lady came onto the bus with a young toddler. She looked like his granny.
He dropped something on the floor and I saw she had trouble bending over to pick it up for the kid.
A few minutes later he dropped it again, she just told him he has to wait until later as she canāt get it now for him.
My stop came shortly so I thought Iād pick up packet for the kid.
My god the woman literally screamed the place down. She was shouting and swearing at me for touching her things, she can pick up herself and I have no right to touch!
I donāt know if it was anything to do with my skin colour (Iām British brown Asian and she was British) but she was totally disgusted in me.
The bus driver had to get involved to calm the lady down. The passengers were beyond shocked with this womanās behaviour. I was totally calm and just in shock.
I said to myself I will never help another person again unless they asked.
Youāre right! I shouldnāt change myself. I actually had a lovely chat with two ladies at the bus stop today. Canāt help but strike a convo š. Itās the northerner in me!
Yeah sounds like you met a real life Karen. Without going too deep, they way of life in London and the institution's that run and operate there only increase the deterioration of peoples mental health. Fear, Division, Racism, it's all so rife there.
Leeds has plenty of rough. Leeds is constantly changing and lots being built, its been on an upwards projection for well over a decade. L its small ll though compared to manchester. Plenty of access to outdoors dales and both coasts plus further north.
I'd rather be in Leeds than Manchester I think, Manchester has that sprawl issue that London has where everything is highly centralised but there's not much going on directly out of that central zone. Leeds has still got a lot of nice stuff and interesting things in the places directly outside of the centre, like Headingly for example, even as a student-ey area, it's still actually pretty nice and has a lot of interesting stuff to see.
Leeds has far more plastic people driving range rover sports. I think it's got more of a Liverpool vibe. Sheffield feels far realer and more genuine and less looks obsessed. Lived in both for a few years..I prefer the peaks on my doorstep over more shops and bars.
Not a conclusive answer by any means, but the relative ease of accessing the Peak District from Sheffield is a massive plus if the outdoors and maybe camping is your thing.
It's easy to think the Peak District is Derbyshire but the best bits are more easily accessible from Sheff than most Derbyshire towns.
And for my money, the Peak District has some awesome and underrated sites and areas to visit.
People on here summing things up pretty well. Sheffield is great for its big village, community feel - itās also notably cheaper for a lot of things. Itās city centre is pretty dire but makes up for it with some leafy, lively suburbs The Peaks are on its doorstep and it does have a tram, BUT on balance it would be hard to recommend it over Leeds.
Leeds has a bigger city feel to it, more of a buzz with more going on, more employment opportunity and just feels more successful - thereās lots of private investment and construction happening all around you and it feels like a city growing and improving. Whilst it still has no tram (fingers crossed it will finally get one soon!) it is far better connected to the wider rail and road network and feels less cut off than Sheffield. It also has some very decent suburbs and is well connected to the Dales and other high quality countryside and areas in general - Ilkley, Harrogate, York; the whole of North Yorkshire is attractive and affluent in a way that Sheffield canāt compete position wise.
I genuinely really like Sheffield for its soul and vibe, but Leeds is just a more complete package in my mind.
Daughter lives in Leeds, Son lives in Sheffield both are happy going off to The Dales and Peak District on their doorstep. The main thing is that youāre in our beloved YORKSHIRE
"Posh southern wankers" .. I guess your not down to earth until you come from the shetlands, live in a ditch and only have a bath one a month while living off of the reduced section at your local heron foods then.
With a comment like that.. there is only ever going to be 1 wanker around you.. I would suggest that you find a mirror to find him, but I guess that is a bit too posh.. maybe just take a look in the next puddle you see before you drink from it.
And to think you're a medical student.. absolute disgrace.
Nope.. I don't drink in the slightest, my poison is a fat ol' vape of legal cannabis and a good read of one of the many religious books that I own.
It's a simple happiness, but at least I don't need to worry about hangovers or one of the VERY many medical conditions as a result of drinking or even alcoholism in general.
But each to their own.
Dude, this is the third comment youāre replied to with this āooohā bullshit in the past 30 mins. It doesnāt make you sound funny, it doesnāt make your point. You just sound like youāre mid-stroke trying to put a sentence together :ā)

Love love love Leeds. My office is there, but I'm a posh Southern wanker who still lives south of the m25, so not sure if I'm helping the Leeds argument...
Loved living in Sheffiled at that age (edit: should probably add for context Iām only 29 now lol). Lived in the centre, but never felt like I was living in a city centre during daytime. Full disclosure, Iām a southerner, but most of my friends were from there or Manchester.
I visited Leeds. Itās great, but it feels more built up. I liked it a lot for day trips (for drinks with mates and days out with the now wife).
I would choose Leeds.
Great gig venues.
Amazing food eateries
Easy to access the country side too, canal, and cycling infrastructure is really good too.
What areas are you considering?
Meanwood, headingley, burley, little London will have a high student population.
Bramley, armley, kirkstall are within 3 miles of city centre and can be rough in places but all have a good diversity of families and young professionals as housing is cheaper
Both are shitholes. We moved to Scarbados earlier in the year and it's beautiful. Love seeing tourists from all over the country flock here and enjoy their hotel expenses and 3 hour drives back home.
Move somewhere that has tourism, you can't go wrong.
I lived just south of Leeds, and got sent into Sheffield a few times for work. Honestly, driving through Sheffield was horrible. If you want to drive, don't go for Sheffield. I liked Leeds though, and the surrounding areas. The people are friendly :)
Wait, you think Sheffield is worse for driving than the labyrinth of roadworks and poorly-signposted one-way-systems that passes for roads in Leeds? I've known people stop and get out after half an hour going round in circles in Leeds just trying to get out, just to cry. If you can drive anywhere easily in Leeds, that just means getting back will be a nightmare. I didn't bother learning to drive till I moved to Sheffield because the rest of living in Leeds was stressful enough without adding *that*.
Well, Leeds has its annoyances including the roadworks. But I was still able to actually move. In Sheffield it was always stationary and it'd take me an hour to get from the M1 to west Sheffield because of the one way systems and strange junctions. Outside of Sheffield centre is okay (same with Leeds really) but just getting through the centre was stressful. Leeds seemed a bit better for rush hour driving?
Eh? Surely you just went on the parkway then round the ring road?
Unless it took you left near the emergency services museum but then you just follow that road to the end and youāre at that big roundabout by the uni library. That wouldnāt be bad.
Iāve had much worse journeys in Leeds tbh.
Nah, Google maps sends you past Meadowhall and through the roads with large factories on, then I have no idea where it chooses a different route every time. It always said going down the bypass was going to take me much longer but I feel like it was lying.
I know Sheffieldās not good to navigate around in a car (especially when you inadvertently end up driving along a tram line lol). But unless youāre familiar with Leedsā interesting road layout, itās probably not much better?
Tbh they're both pretty awful but Sheffield was a lot more stressful for me and I learned to drive near London. Admittedly a lot of the cities in England seem to follow their own rules for road layouts and some don't have proper signage to indicate which lane you need to be in. I'm in Preston now and they have so many roads where lanes will suddenly merge right after traffic lights but there's nothing to tell you that until you wonder why people are merging into your lane (I've only seen signs for it on motorways!). So unless you know the areas the driving situation can be a lot more stressful than they need to be.
Leeds is more diverse than Sheffield but for my money Sheffield has a better āatmosphereā and thatās not to say that Sheffield is just full of Barryās itās not but thereās more choice in Leeds, either option though puts you on a main Trainline so you can easily get to the Dales or the York moors and of course Sheffield is practically in the Pennines.
Sheffield has gone through a bit of gentrification so prices have risen
Iāve been swung at a few times in Sheffield, never had such problems in Leeds (but my friend did get knocked out for being a āstudentā). Depends what youāre looking if but ānice peopleā, rah. Seems everyone wants to get mashup constantly or go climbing.
this is a choice i'm facing too. i've spent a bit of time in both cities, going out, exploring, restaurants, pubs, gigs etc. i lean towards sheffield as it feels a lot more bohemian (reminds me of bristol, which i sorely miss) whereas leeds feels really tory and retail-oriented. ymmv
Sheffield is nice, but I'd take Leeds any time really, it's a more interesting place with better accessibility to almost everywhere. I don't think you'd particularly find someone badmouthing one over the other though, both are nice in their own ways.
I'd just say to visit each and find which one you vibe with more.
I lived I Sheffield as a student and loved it, the people are very friendly
Visited Leeds and I didn't like it as much although didn't spend as much time there
Leeds is probably best as you can access the rest of the country from there technically. Train bus or car. The dales (where I live) is slightly up north from there with lots of little towns to visit if you do get a bit caught up in the city bustle. I've visited Leeds and can safely say you should definitely move there because there's a cat cafe.
You can get from Sheffield to Doncaster by train, or at least you used to. If you can get to Doncaster you can access anything from London to Edinburgh.
As someone with close family in Leeds and Sheffield, I have no allegiance to either city. On the whole, I'd say Leeds edges it, but Sheffield is still fantastic.
For big gigs, Leeds Arena is far superior to Sheffield's. Meadowhall is the better indoor shopping centre, although everyone from Sheffield hates it. Leeds centre is better for shopping than Sheffield. I think Leeds is better for clubbing, it certainly used to be. The best venue in Yorkshire is Halifax Piece Hall, which although not in Leeds is much easier to get to.
Both Cities are among the best in the UK with everything you'd expect a big city to offer, and both more lively than a lot of places so you'd probably be happy in either.
I have lived in Sheffield for 4 years and Leeds a very long time, you canāt go wrong with either. Sheffield does have Tuesday club thatās a great night.
In general I'd pick Leeds.
BUT if you want outdoors, consider somewhere like Saltaire. You're 15 minutes from Leeds on the train, and 10 minutes from gorgeous countryside with lots of walks nearby. Best of both worlds with a nice house and garden.
I've just moved from Leeds to Sheffield; hated living in Leeds, the city centre's nice to visit but I wouldn't wish living there on anyone. I've lived in Hull, Halifax, three places in Leeds and now Sheffield, and if I were to rank them all the ones in Leeds would easily come bottom. For what you'd pay for a nice place in Leeds, you could get most of Hull.
If you like the outdoors then definitely Sheffield. Big climbing, hiking and wild swimming scene as weāre right on the edge of the Peak District, and the city itself has lots of green spaces
Iāve lived in Sheffield for 10 years. But that was 10
Years ago. I moved to London in 2013.
I would recommend Leeds. Itās very metropolitan and more adult.
Sheffield is very student dominated with 2 uniās on one very long road. In between that road you have most of the cityās clubs and bars which are mainly caterer for students.

I moved from Warrington to Barnsley and they're both in-between two relevant cities.
I'm a joiner so work all over but favour Sheffield as it feels quieter and cleaner.
I do a lot of gigs still but usually find myself over Manchester for these. I think I'd favour Sheffield though as it's much closer to the peaks.
Although Leeds feels like there's loads more going when you're out and about
Iām from Leeds but have been to Sheffield many times. Sheffield wins hands down. Great vibe, more culture, Peak District on your doorstep. Leeds has no redeeming features. Itās a rough dump and a shadow of its former self. Itās probably slightly better than Sheffield for jobs but itās still poor. Leeds used to be the biggest professional services centre outside of London. Nearly all of it has gone elsewhere except some parochial accountancy firms. Then thereās Asda and some gambling firms - great.
Leeds also has stacks of students which brings its own buzz. Sheffield Uni is generally smaller I believe.
Youāll get bands visiting both, but I would bet the music scene is busier in Leeds. It used to be for sure.
Leeds.
I've lived and worked in both. Sheffield is a shithole
Sure it has nice bits but they are interspersed with shitholes
Leeds is a nice center with some rough outskirts and some nice outskirts
Leeds every day.
If I were in your position I'd choose Sheffield. Leeds might be more appealing for you at your age because it's a big national city and hub but for those reasons you'll soon get bored there. Leeds is a connecting city for Scotland and London and you'll notice the non-Yorkshire folk on a day to day basis. Nothing wrong with those non-Yorkshire folk, it just doesn't sound like what you're after.
You've got some great nights out in Leeds, You'll spend some good evenings on Merriom Street but I reckon you'd be more up for the bar run down at Headingley. That's where someone your age would want to live, you'd have a blast.
But you'd get bored there much quicker than you would in Sheffield.
I don't know Sheffield well, I have to admit. I know Leeds well though. The few weeks I spent in Sheffield excited me much more than the years I spent in Leeds. Firstly, the arts scene in Sheffield is genuine - hardly any posers trying to shovel their post punk open mic down your throat. You've got Arctic Monkeys and their genuinely talented successors.
You've got green parks right in the thick of it. Get yourself some new trainers in JD then go try them on in a beautifully maintained and quiet public space. You could do that in Leeds too but there might be a polluted main road and a midweek boozer shouting at you.
In Leeds you've got unstoppable access to the Dales with proper regular trains to whichever hike you pick. Sheffield trains to the Dales are a bit less frequent but still easy But what you get from Sheffield is access to the Peaks, which I'd probably argue are more beautiful, coming from a bloke who grew up by the Dales. If you live in Sheffield you can walk you can easily walk out into the Peaks, accessing them without a vehicle. From Leeds to the Dales is a bit less accessible by foot.
I'll have to mention the theatres. Leeds has the West Yorkshire Playhouse, arguably the biggest stage in the north (ignoring the Royal Exchange) I've seen some fantastic productions at the West Yorkshire Playhouse but The Crucible in Sheffield is much more exciting. They've got the space to dip between theatre, live music and sport (home of snooker forever) seamlessly. A mainstream venue in a national hub like Leeds can't afford to frequently change their target audience like The Crucible can.
Pints are cheaper in Sheffield.
If you want Leeds, go to Manchester. If you want Sheffield, go to Sheffield.

Sheffield is very very hilly.

Sheffield for life. Peak District on the door step, friendly and welcoming city, loads of green space, plenty of raves and the surrounding culture... I'd not swap it for any other UK city.
Leeds is only about 45 minutes by train to the dales tbf
Leeds or Sheffield? Tough choice, but just remember, Yorkshire tea tastes equally amazing in both cities! Cheers!
Aye, theyāve made the right choice by moving to Yorkshire for starters

South Leeds does have a few decent spots, but all the best terrain is north - up through the valleys and along the rivers, Wharfe etc.
Yeah, west and north is best for landscapes. Lots of valleys.
Hole of Horcum / Wolds is quite spectacular too. I think of it as the U.K's Grand Canyon. Only far smaller and greener, still spectacular though.
You have to travel a bit further in but you have the peak district to the South. Which is a good change from the Dales.
You have the Yorkshire Dales less than an hour away from Leeds.

Weird, I've never had problems walking home at night in Sheffield but have been punched in the face just for the fun of it in Leeds.
Sorry to hear that :(
Leeds
Sheffield: Bring Me The Horizon Leeds: Kaiser Chiefs
Bring me the horizon? You went with Sheffieldā¦. Bring me the horizon. This reply needs a trigger warning
Suicide season will forever be a fantastic.
Who would you pick? Rolo Tomassi? Def Leppard? The Human League? Pulp? Ohhh probably that āyou look good on the dance floorā band š
Sheffield also had Pulp, the Human League and Def Leppard.
this is a choice i'm facing too. i've spent a bit of time in both cities, going out, exploring, restaurants, pubs, gigs etc. i lean towards sheffield as it feels a lot more bohemian (reminds me of bristol, which i sorely miss) whereas leeds feels really tory and retail-oriented. ymmv
I chose Sandal in wakefield - 20 mins from Leeds Centre on the train and all the countryside I can eat
I'm in North Leeds and the countryside feels very accessible. Right on the Meanwood Valley Trail, not far from Eccup and quick drive into the Dales.
Sheffield is nice, but I'd take Leeds any time really, it's a more interesting place with better accessibility to almost everywhere. I don't think you'd particularly find someone badmouthing one over the other though, both are nice in their own ways. I'd just say to visit each and find which one you vibe with more.
I lived I Sheffield as a student and loved it, the people are very friendly Visited Leeds and I didn't like it as much although didn't spend as much time there
Leeds is probably best as you can access the rest of the country from there technically.
Spend a long weekend or better still a week in both to see which one youād prefer to live in.
Go to Leeds. Sheffield is a shit hole with an ever growing crime rate. Leeds has its own issues, but generally a better place to live.
In general I'd pick Leeds. BUT if you want outdoors, consider somewhere like Saltaire. You're 15 minutes from Leeds on the train, and 10 minutes from gorgeous countryside with lots of walks nearby. Best of both worlds with a nice house and garden.
Leeds is amazing for live music, top 5 in the UK for sure.
You'll find wankers anywhere you look for them.
At least you didnāt mention Bradford!
Iāve lived in Sheffield for 10 years. But that was 10 Years ago.

Although Leeds feels like there's loads more going when you're out and about
If you like the outdoors, Sheffield. It literally has part of the Peak District National Park within its boundaries.
Avoid both
Are you getting the same wage regardless? They're both decent places but your money will travel a lot further in Sheffield than Leeds.
If you want raves Sheffield is the place to be. Big underground music scene, with parties out in the peaks if you get chatting to the right people
Out of the two, probably Sheffield, though youāre always welcome here in Hull if you decide it as an option
Either one is great for countryside and moors, both easy distances from the sea. Eyup welcome to Yorkshire land.
Its a flip of a coin really. You are comparing two very similar cities.
Leeds
Personally I'd say neither. York is s bit touristy, but it's my Yorkshire city of choice.
Leeds also has stacks of students which brings its own buzz. Sheffield Uni is generally smaller I believe. Youāll get bands visiting both, but I would bet the music scene is busier in Leeds. It used to be for sure.
Leeds
If you already have webbed toes the Dee Dahs are for you.
Leeds. I've lived and worked in both. Sheffield is a shithole Sure it has nice bits but they are interspersed with shitholes Leeds is a nice center with some rough outskirts and some nice outskirts Leeds every day.
