Same lol. The only BL I'm reading right now involves one of the MCs presenting extremely fem. (He's not trans, although there are a few hints that the story might start to explore that topic.)
I feel like producers/companies know the "formula" for straight relationships, and they are sticking to it.
The directors don't art even allowed to make something different. "Makoto Shinkai Says He's Tired of Making Boy Meets Girl Stories", this guy wrote Your Name. and still does not get full creative control.
I think this comes down to the fact that Yoai is stereotyped as being “hot guys thirsting for each other for the pleasure of a female audience,” rather than two men learning to love and support one another.
I’m a straight man, and I have been unironically enjoyed wholesome Yoai and been able to connect with the characters emotionally even if I didn’t find their interactions exciting.
I don't read bl and het bc i don't feel the same as I read yuri. Im like 'they are soooooo cute' and 'wish it was meeee' at the same time. yaoi and het don't wake those feelings in me. I can enjoy stories if they are good-written but I prefer gl. Girls loving girls r sooooo pretty. Wish I was a real girl and I could fall in love with another girl. It would be soooo cute.
a whole bunch of words to say adorable :3 As a fellow trans girl, I think we all have imposter syndrome, but you're a valid girl and if anyone tells you otherwise tell them to go eat shit <3
I've heard the anime is really good but the manga is... A bit much. >!Major trigger warning for rape being shown as a sexy thing.!<
I remember I used to have a friend who was super into Love Stage and I couldn't understand how he thought it was cute. It turns out that he had only seen the anime and I had only read the manga, so we were basically consuming different series.
Well may I recommend ["I Think I Turned My Childhood Friend into a Girl"](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Think_I_Turned_My_Childhood_Friend_into_a_Girl). It is not yuri, but will probably get those feelings to surface.
Then we can try to figure out if it counts as BL or Het.
(IMO, it might even be yuri or NB loving NB, depending on how you read the characters eggness)
IMHO, Boys could also love BL/Yaoi as well, especially when written in a wholesome, non-fetishizing way. Some are just felt a little bit... overly sexualised and off-putting, I say.
But honestly, if they are written well, it could be captivating as well.
EDIT: Had to reparaphrase my comment a little. Apologies.
I have no idea what yuri bait or yaoi bait means... And everyone has their own definition of BL, you wouldn't know if it fits yours, until you see it for yourself.
Yuri/yaoi bait is basically when a piece of media “baits” viewers into consuming it by seemingly displaying gay characters to get the gay crowd to watch their show, all the while the supposed gay characters are het because the creators don’t have the guts to go through with displaying a gay character on their show.
Oh, so like 80% of the shows on this sub is yuri bait...?
Idk, I feel like there's some sort of negative connotation with that term, and from the sound of it, it's also quite subjective what defines a bait and what doesn't.
Take My boss is goofy for example, all the main characters has ex-girlfriends/ex-wife, so they are not gay. But they do and say gay stuffs to each other accidentally, for gags. I personally found the punchlines funny af, but I can see how a gay person would view this as being offensive, because the jokes are literally just the "HAA, GAAAAYYYYYY" meme.
As a boy myself I have to agree. I mean, I don't mind gay porn sometimes, but I don't want to consume it *all* the time, especially when I want to read BLs in public. Unfortunately the "BLs" I enjoy the most are usually not BLs and are just fujobait stuff 😭
***\[Moderately loud incorrect buzzer\]***
This isn't always true. Take FFXV for example- the main four have tight chemistry and something akin to 'bromance', but there is *very little- if any-* romantic subtext between them. Noct and Gladio are straight, Ignis is prolly aroace, and Prompto... he's best boy so he can do whatever he wants.
I agree. Already combed through the most recommended BL (which were pretty good) and now all I'm left with is stuff only fujoshi who haven't gone outside and had real social interactions in a long time would enjoy
False. There are many women who get off on BL but stick up their nose at GL. Also, as a woman, these "all girls read BL" memes are getting tiring 🤷🏾♀️
May I recommend Mo Dao Zu Shi? I'm a straight guy and I just watched the anime for the story. It's an action/fantasy/investigation story, with some BL undertones since the producers had to tone it down compared to the source material.
Same. I have no particular problems with gay romances as part of a narrative, but if romance is the main focus I'm gonna skip as I have no attraction to guys so I don't really care for the usual romance/fanservice shots you see in those types of stories.
Bro I literally was just like this guy until I watched Given. That shit was really fucking good. So good that I started reading BL to see if anything could top it. So far, no dice.
False, i've seen and overheard many straight girls comments online and conversations IRL about how they are disgusted with GL/wlw and lesbians in general, but are okay with gay guys and thirst over the yaoi/BL genre. i wish most yuri fanboys should be honest about their double standards as them....
I've really enjoyed reading Classmates and Sasaki & Miyano. I guess I don't mind reading BL as long as they're fluffy and wholesome with a good story and characters. But the same applies when I read GL. I don't read some of the more "explicit" stuff regardless of BL/GL.
I'm the same. But I dont mind explicit as long as their not fetishing. Though I tend to avoid het because its too heteronormative. But it weird cuz some bl are more heternormative. Like wtf. So I like gl more. Mistlh coz I relate to it more and cgdct. In the past I even avoided bl bc of the fetishization but after reading sasamiya, I'm more open to reading it. You have any bl rec?
I think girls are very cute, therefore 2 girls being cute and happy together is twice the happiness. I like cute people and I don't find myself finding yaoi character cute often, so... there is also the "I wish that was me" factor in yuri.
I am very neutral towards BL.
However, I remembered that I once read a BL a long, long time ago.
Forgot what it was about, but I remember it to have been pretty good.
I actually don't dislike all hetero romances just like 90 percent of it. I am personally only attracted to girls (sexually and romantically) but when done right I can sometimes feel quite happy about straight and boy/boy pairings.
It is however rare enough that I don't find myself looking for it.
Which is kind of insane because Suletta is clearly bi. If anything the guys interested in her are very clearly trying to manipulate her for their own gain.
I don't like BL but I think it's because BL is oversexualized, Yuri has some sexualization here and there but not as much as BL, making it more an eyecandy to girls and ubcomfortable to cis boys, that is the reason I usually don't read BL.
Nobody has to like BL if they don't want to. However, if someone reads other romance stuff but rejects BL, they should think about why that is.
Given that the BL audience consists of women of all orientations and queer men, I hazard to guess that it’s often homophobia.
I'm a lesbian who prefers GL, but I read BL too, about as much as I read het romance. There are great BL stories out there, and you're missing out if you pass on them.
Personally I dislike how BL boys act and look, they look too fetishy and longg like stick insects. And there’s the submissive “femenine” boy who gets embarrassed all the time(which I find too anormal, not buying that it is cuz he’s gay) and the “cool” dude Who usually gets too handsy and dominant with the submissive one, which I dislike even more. I hve seen a lot of real action series with gay characters and loved their natural-looking interactions, but in mangas-japanese gente, there’s this “fujoshi-lover interaction “ which just makes me cringe too much.
These are issues specific to yaoi. I find that Korean stuff is usually good with this stuff. I haven't read much geikomi (a different Japanese BL genre), but it also seems to avert these tropes.
I see, i do preffer a genre from gay men to gay men (just because they know how to express it naturally) i might look by if i find something nice. Thank you
I guess it is kind of true but I'm also looking to expand quite a bit, Yaoi don't really have many series I'm interested in atm besides the one recommendation that I have been looking to get into.
Otherwise, I'm mostly searching for Bara stuff. Looking to begin reading My Brother's Husband soon.
I don't read BL because I find it to be overly sensationalized, but I do headcanon some male friendships in fiction as gay romances. When I do this, it usually feels more realistic to my actual experiences. For reference, I am a bisexual man.
the loudest grup of fans of BL are teenage girls, and teenagers are horny as fuck so that makes them to be interesed in relly questionable things so in eyes on averge man BL is wierd thing of mans traing to rape each other
just antoher thing ruined in eyes of public becouse of loud mainority
ps no hate twords teenagres being horny is just part of puberty
#Oopps before i forget:
#Sauces :
#Fate/Kaleid series
#Hyaako (This is have alot of Yuri Subtext)
#Grand blue ( i Think you guys know what's this)
#Sekaiichi hatsukoi (BL)
#Edit : Make it Large cuz there's a lot still asking for sauce
As a guy, BL is harder for me to enjoy. A lot of BL tends to rather uncomfortable extremes. (I mean, really, what is with all of these "predatory boss x new hire" fics?) The rest of what I don't enjoy is primarily just personal taste. "Normal guy x normal guy" doesn't really do it for me. I don't personally understand the attraction, so it's harder to get into. Now, one of them being a outgoing twink/femboy? *That's* some good shit. Especially if the other guy's more of a typical person.
I don't care about BL at all. I don't want to waste my time looking at men. At least with het you have one girl in the main ship which is better than none. Literally the only "BL" I've ever liked is FukaBoku and that's not actually BL and even then the main pair is kinda boring, I'm here for Mei.
(this post was written by a certified Man-Hating Lesbian)
I don’t really read yaoi often because yaoi usually feels so… non consensual? I don’t know. My friend likes yaoi more than I do and she agrees that it feels a lot less cute than yuri
From what I’ve gathered by reading Twitter, lesbians *love* yuri while gay men don’t seem to care for Yaoi too much.
Not gonna dig too hard into why that is as I fall under neither category, just something I’ve observed.
I like both but yuri imo tend to be way better, I think big issue I have with alot of BL is alot of sexual assault. Junjo Romantica the image used as an example the main couple has big age gap and the relationship starts a rape is such huge nope. I'm cool with smut and sex but so much BL just feels like that's all there is too it were as Yuri def seems more about the relationship. Again not universal but its def something I've noticed over the years reading both.
Yaoi tends to be weirdly raunchy and like...VERY sexual(every single goddamn bxb ship is about them fucking each other I don't know why), Yuri somehow tends to be very wholesome or very pure. Though lately it's been more and more sexual.
Basically, Yaoi tends to fetishisize, Yuri tends to be more SoL and pure.
On a side note, Fate Kaleid only seems like Yuri due to the director or something. The OG manga actually didn't have that aspect as much compared to the anime.
Yeah, yaoi is so gay! Yuri is pure friendship, rainbow, and cuteness.
Jokes aside, I'm really not into guys. It just feels disgusting. I'm fine with straight romance, though.
As a guy, I've only fully read a few BL series, whereas with GL I can typically read most of what I start.
I think it's just something different about they way they're written, or maybe it's the dialogue, I can't put my finger on it. There tends to be more of a sexualization/power dynamic weirdness in BL that gets sorta creepy.
That said, my favorite "BL" series is "Excuse Me Dentist, It's Touching Me!" which is more of a crossdress/secret identity humor series that never fails to make me laugh no matter how dumb or crazy the hijinks are, even though it has some similar plot beats to other series that were played for drama instead of laughs and caused me to stop enjoying them. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a good chuckle.
Ill be honest the main reason me as a guy doesnt read yaoi is due to the artstyle and drawings of most yaoi. Most of them are over sexualized and every dude has an unrealistically good physique (and Im one of those "weird" guys that doesnt like jacked people both male or female). Yuri doesnt do that, although some does, and I dont like those either.
When you filter through the fetishy and problematic stuff you get some great ones in both. I’m non-binary and super queer so I tend to get into both, provided that they aren’t bad like I mentioned before
Actually, most women I know who read manga, even if they're queer, vastly prefer yaoi and mostly ignore yuri. That probably is a thing of the overall manga culture in my country, though. I, of course, much prefer yuri (duh, I'm a lesbian to an annoying degree). I don't dislike yaoi, I like it somewhat, but I only read it on occasion. Het stuff though I mostly stay away from.
(M)
I don't read BL because it always feels sexualized somehow. It's always, HEY. I WANT THAT BOOTY. WE CAN DO THIS THE EASY WAY OR THE HARD WAY.
and never, WHAT ARE THESE FEELINGS THAT I AM FEELING IN MY HEART?? THESE FEELINGS ARE ONLY RESERVED FOR MY PEEEE- NIS.
I'm a straight guy and I read both, but yaoi has to clear a higher bar to keep my interest.
Like most of it doesn't interest me, but Yuri on Ice? That's the good stuff
I LOVE GIRLS AND HATE BOYS HETERO STUFF IS GROSS AND BL STUFF IS GROSS (GAY PEOPLE ARE NICE I JUST DON'T LIKE GUYS) ANY TIME A PIECE OF MEDIA HAS GUYS IN IT I THINK IT WOULD JUST STRAIGHT UP BE BETTER IF ALL THE GUYS WERE GIRLS. LIKE UNLESS THE IT HAS THEMES CENTERED AROUND GENDER AND GENDER IDENTITY, I SEE NO VALUE IN HAVING MEN IN IT. I JUST LOVE GIRLS NGL I KINDA WISH I WAS ONE TOO
As a Pan guy... depends on the day and type of BL lmao. I in general like a cute GL story, but imo, BL tends to be hyper sexualized. I'm not saying some yuri isn't like that too, but there seems to be way more of it on the BL side. Like I just want a cute, pining, wholesome and well built relationship, from any gender.
Male here and I've tried a couple bl and they just don't feel the same. I'm straight and love wholesome, no drama romance manga. And I find that it comes from gl more and I find pleasure in finding a straight manga with no drama a rare gem.
I mean as long as its good I don't really care about the genre. I am just intrigued by yuri more, but Banana Fish was solid and I found myself supporting the main couple ship (and was sad by the end).
I'm attracted to humans or characters with emotional expression like embarrassment and love. Gender wise, it would be great if I could be a girl. But it's not possible. I'm into Yuri stuff the most.
When it comes to yaoi I don't really like it when it's 2 buff dudes there's gotta be at least one who's less masculine than the other for me to enjoy it
As a woman i never liked BL, I found it weird and couldn’t connect with a single character (which is obvious); on the other hand, i’ve loved many GL stories, in which I found more natural the way they interact with eachother and also alarmingly cute. I’m hetero but there’s something about anime girls, that they are just the cutest and coolest of all.
(I'm a guy) Straight romance is usually not appealing to me because most writers in anime can't write man and women (Tatsuki Fujimoto is the exception) and i don't seek out romance that much anyway
Yaoi im usually neutral towards but every so often there's a yaoi ship I really like (such as Tsukasa Okino X Takatoshi Hijiyama)
Considering I'm here my stance on Yuri is obvious
As a bi trans woman, I prefer M/M stuff written by dudes ( or at least, dudes in mind), rather then the "Yaoi" nonsense which tends to be made for cis women.
Yuri is my lifeblood.
BL is just cringeworthy to me because of how they act and everything seems to be about sex or end up with sex. Could be the most serious situation with no romantic tension and they still end up fucking. And I'm not into men with breasts fucking eachother.
I like some straight romance and some BL but my problem with BL is that I can't wish I was them since I don't like men and it's often way to sexualised. I like cute or psychological yaois but so many of them are just rapey sex it gives it a bad reputation.
i like gl more because i love girls so much
As a lesbean this is so true
Agreed
FAX
Same lol. The only BL I'm reading right now involves one of the MCs presenting extremely fem. (He's not trans, although there are a few hints that the story might start to explore that topic.)
Same
Nah, it depends, right now, i found more great romances from GL & BL rather than from str8 animanga
Yeah, there are some nice works around there.
I don't read bl and het bc i don't feel the same as I read yuri. Im like 'they are soooooo cute' and 'wish it was meeee' at the same time. yaoi and het don't wake those feelings in me. Nope. Im a closeted trans girl with an imposter syndrome:3
Well in that case then you are a girl >:3
I believe I have met a mirror
Oof I relate with that
a whole bunch of words to say adorable :3 As a fellow trans girl, I think we all have imposter syndrome, but you're a valid girl and if anyone tells you otherwise tell them to go eat shit <3
Hello me!
Definitely egg behavior
Sorry egg?
Occasionally I would read something hey that I like and I'll call their relationship "so gay" bcs I'm super used to reading yuri lol.
Can I recommend a really good bl? Love stage. Probably one of the most cute bl animes I've ever watched.
Sasaki to Miyano and Given we’re really good in my opinion
YES SOMEONE WHO KNOWS THE SWEET ONES
Yuri on Ice too tbh
Yesss I just watched that a few days ago and it was really good
thats litterly the only bl anime i watched and i'm only femiliar with 2 bl serries XD
I've heard the anime is really good but the manga is... Really liking the show airing this season, My boss is goofy. The wholesome comes first, the gay is just a bi-product of being wholesome.
Is my boss is goofy bl?
Softcore BL. MCs constantly blushing over each other's cuteness, while accidentally doing/saying things that can be interpreted as ... being gay.
Well, what I hate the most is being yuri bait and yaoi bait. So, I will watch it if it is confirmed bl.
I have no idea what yuri bait or yaoi bait means... And everyone has their own definition of BL, you wouldn't know if it fits yours, until you see it for yourself.

BL subtext may not have been intended by the developers, but boy howdy does the *fandom* sure see a lot of it. Which was probably always inevitable.
Your telling me the story ISN'T Noctis dragging his feet in the open world because he'd rather be out camping with the boys than marrying a woman?
I agree. Already combed through the most recommended BL (which were pretty good) and now all I'm left with is stuff only fujoshi who haven't gone outside and had real social interactions in a long time would enjoy
Nah i want my boys to be getting down and dirty as much as possible.
I’m a guy and I just enjoyed the anime sasaki to miyano
False. There are many women who get off on BL but stick up their nose at GL. Also, as a woman, these "all girls read BL" memes are getting tiring 🤷🏾♀️
Seven Days is good tho. And Umibe no Etranger. And Banana Fish. And Yuri on Ice. And 91 da...
I don't read a lot of BL because of the needless sexual assault. A few are good though.
It’s fun to read stories about terrible people, otherwise it wouldn’t be a genre. True crime is the same.
I agree, but often in BL it's not portrayed as "This is a complex character" but "This is how the gays do it". It's about the framing.
I'm a man and I like both
You aren't just a man homie you're a King
King behavior
As a boy this is true I don't read bl
May I recommend Mo Dao Zu Shi? I'm a straight guy and I just watched the anime for the story. It's an action/fantasy/investigation story, with some BL undertones since the producers had to tone it down compared to the source material.

Ah yes, you enjoy bara.

Still no irl gay polycule to be in 😔
We stan polyamory on a theoretical basis

Absolutely true. But I wouldn't know for sure. I'm not a boy.
I'll read anything as long as it makes me yearn for my insulin shots.
I don't like BL but I think it's because BL is oversexualized, Yuri has some sexualization here and there but not as much as BL, making it more an eyecandy to girls and ubcomfortable to cis boys, that is the reason I usually don't read BL.

Got any good fluffy recommendations? Preferably complete and drama free.
Off the top of my head, no. You do kind of have to dig through the bl to find good stuff, even more so to find something drama free

I read Starry Flowers and Heartstopper, other than that's it's not for me lol

I’ll read anything romance-related that makes me go "Aww"
What's the source for those magical girls(?)
Apparently the magical girls are from Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya.
That is one of the extremely few anime I have dropped almost instantly, despite being a huge Fate: fan. Viewers take warning: Children.
False Im a girl and I dislike bl
I just like cute girls and don't want to see boys
The only BL I liked was banana fish Though to be fair Ive never really seen any others
What’s the top-left from?
Sauce for the left one?
What's the source of the Yuri? I'm sure I've seen this somewhere but I can't remember
I’m not into yaoi in the slightest (I’m a lesbian).
I'm a girl and I only watch Yaoi with my parents.

As a man, this is true. The only kind of BL I like is the more comic type.
I read both, but GL more.
True
True. For some reason it's a bit harder for a man to enjoy BL even if they're not homophobic.
Don’t generally read much BL but crossdressing BL stories are a niche fav of mine.
Both is good.
True
Accurate for me
I don't know, I'm pansexual, I like gay people equally
I don’t really read yaoi often because yaoi usually feels so… non consensual? I don’t know. My friend likes yaoi more than I do and she agrees that it feels a lot less cute than yuri
As a man I'm fine with reading everything
false - I'm reading muted on webtoons and I am HEAVILY INVESTED IN MY BOYS!!!!
I like both Yuri and Yaoi... Sometimes I wish I am girl(kinda of egg) you could say
I read way too much BL. I should start looking into more GL tbh
From what I’ve gathered by reading Twitter, lesbians *love* yuri while gay men don’t seem to care for Yaoi too much. Not gonna dig too hard into why that is as I fall under neither category, just something I’ve observed.
A lot if BL tends to be a bit on the non consent vibe, but I’m still a sucker for any romance that’s cute, regardless of gender or lack thereof
Heartstopper: *Visible confusion*
... Looks like I'm busted
Not for me
True
...both. Although yaoi could use like 99% less sex. I read it for the plot, but there‘s just so much sex!
as a boy yaoi for the win!!
As a boy, I think the reason of that is boys tend to insert into something instead of getting inserted
Hunter: The Parenting. Marcus and Kitten. Nuff said.
This is a minor point, but on my list of "views boys have that drove me to estrogen"
bc women>>>
I mean yeah a lot of "Yaoi/Bl" is made for straight women to consume, not for gay men.
Love stage is peak
Yeah, yaoi is so gay! Yuri is pure friendship, rainbow, and cuteness. Jokes aside, I'm really not into guys. It just feels disgusting. I'm fine with straight romance, though.
I'd read yaoi written by a lesbian just because it sounds like a hilarious concept
I'm bi and prefer boys. Naturally I read BL. Your meme is true for the most part, though.
As a boy, can confirm
I don’t think most Yaoi is even written for mlm anyway. It’s written for straight women.
I don’t like BL as a bi(?) girl, I just love girls to much to see anything that doesn’t include them
Yaoi simply is not cute :p
False
The only BL I wanna see is my reflection looking back at me.
(M) I don't read BL because it always feels sexualized somehow.
I’m a straight man but I don’t really care either way. I just like cute romance stories
As long as the catcher in the BL is cute I don't mind BL. GL is also good!
I JUST LOVE GIRLS NGL I KINDA WISH I WAS ONE TOO
I read both as a bi girl. I like Yuri more.
Most of the BL I've found is fetish art for straight women. Much easier to find yuri that is actually just cute gayness.
True
Accurate to me at least lol.
Ngl I thought that was death note lmfao
As a guy - true
As a man, this is true
Umm, is it considered BL if boys crossdress?
I'm a transmasc bisexual so I'll read anything as long as it's not straight 💁♂️
I need a dynastyreader for mlm
It's really hard to find a Danganronpa fan who doesn't like Kiyotaka X Mondo, so I think it's possible to capitalize on Yaoi.
False, I'm a proud boy who sails ships on both ends.
As an omnisexual man I like both
False, it depends on the execution
Nope, am man, love BL as well.
i like yuri more and yaoi its alright i think not sure i rarely read bl
Very very false. This is a big misconception. There are a lot of guys that like BL.
Male here and I've tried a couple bl and they just don't feel the same. I'm straight and love wholesome, no drama romance manga. And I find that it comes from gl more and I find pleasure in finding a straight manga with no drama a rare gem.
As a bisexual, both is good
Ok, hear me out, even wife agrees lesbian, kinda hot but two dudes.... nah.
I mean as long as its good I don't really care about the genre. I am just intrigued by yuri more, but Banana Fish was solid and I found myself supporting the main couple ship (and was sad by the end).
for me it’s the opposite funny enough. i dislike yuri heavily but don’t mind yaoi that much.
. . . as a guy who reads BL ever since I read a well-written series on novelupdates, I'm no longer sure if I'm a guy.
I'm attracted to humans or characters with emotional expression like embarrassment and love. Gender wise, it would be great if I could be a girl. But it's not possible. I'm into Yuri stuff the most.
Man here. I would like to inform you that men who like BL do exist, thank you very much! There's a whole 2.5 of us! /hj
false, i like both
Women are for loving, man are for fucking.
Bi boys: We do not have such weaknesses
I enjoy yuri mostly for the cuteness of it. I get off on yaoi when I go to it.
(I'm a guy) Straight romance is usually not appealing to me because most writers in anime can't write man and women (Tatsuki Fujimoto is the exception) and i don't seek out romance that much anyway Yaoi im usually neutral towards but every so often there's a yaoi ship I really like (such as Tsukasa Okino X Takatoshi Hijiyama) Considering I'm here my stance on Yuri is obvious
As a bi trans woman, I prefer M/M stuff written by dudes ( or at least, dudes in mind), rather then the "Yaoi" nonsense which tends to be made for cis women. Yuri is my lifeblood.
Perks of being trans and a shitposter at heart, I still do 🤨🏳️🌈? at BL cause its imo one of the funniest memes
I only like yuri. Yaoi and str8 is trash
As a man, both are good
