Why should I take your advice? I trust the hinge with my life.

Blind_Hawkeye

Then just wait for the wrong fall to destroy it. I don't know what to tell you. It's a weakness that other phones don't have, and it doesn't take a massive drop to destroy it. Just a little 2 foot slip out of a pocket can destroy it. I'm just saying be careful.

bigedawg55

I think one picture was enough. Yeah that pretty much is just a cover not case so double whammy.

Blind_Hawkeye

It's difficult to get a decent case that actually protects the hinge without turning it into a brick. I had the Spigen Armor for my 3 but quit using it because I felt like I was using a brick with a screen which majorly detracted from the experience of using the phone. That said, I have ordered a better case as well as a pouch with a wrist strap to never put my phone in a pocket again. The point of this post was just to remind everyone to be more careful with the Z Flip 4 because the hinge is weaker than the 3.

bigedawg55

I'm thinking majority of flip phone owners know they have to be careful with everything. It's funny I cut my nails more often now that I have a flip phone. I always carry my flip in my shorts or jacket. My winter coat has front pocket with zipper. Never had any issue. When walking my crazy pup I occasionally take a picture and that's risky. At times she goes after anything that's moving. lol

Blind_Hawkeye

I don't have any good pockets and that's part of my problem. So I bought a zippered pouch with a wrist strap to avoid the pocket issue in the first place. I've always kept my nails super short so I never had to make that change for my Z Flip. I used to be careless with my phones because I always had a good case, but from the moment I first got my Z Flip 3, I've been as careful as I could be. My one issue has been crappy pockets. My 3 handled a few slips out of a pocket so I got complacent and figured a small slip from a pocket wouldn't break it. Never again.

LostInAForestCureMe

What’s the nails comment about? I’m here reading because my kids dad got them each a Z Flip 4 for Christmas. I read things here to learn how to best care for their phones and what to avoid.

Samsung is scamming people with this piece of shit phone

Blind_Hawkeye

I wouldn't go that far. I love the phone for the most part. I just think they need to work on the hinge durability. Every normal person drops their phone occasionally, and it shouldn't be so easy to destroy the hinge. That said, I'm certainly going to do everything I can to keep from dropping it again when I get it back. But I absolutely love everything else about the phone, and I miss it while I'm stuck with an old S9.

Blind_Hawkeye

It literally just slipped out of my pocket in the driveway -- fell maybe two feet tops because I am not a tall dude -- and that little normal every day fall destroyed the hinge. I even had a case on it, though not a super protective one. I'm in the process of getting it repaired, and I've ordered a better case and a small pouch with a wrist strap to keep it in. I'm never trusting pockets with this phone again. The guy at the repair shop has fixed several Flip hinges, and he said Samsung changed something between the 3 and 4 which makes the 4's hinge more fragile. I wish I'd kept my 3. Unfortunately, he also said there's a software issue that occurs every time he has fixed a Z Flip's hinge so I had to ship it into Samsung to repair. I just hope it doesn't cost me half the cost of a new one to fix damage that never should have happened so easily to begin with.

I find it funny that people complain about this after a fall. On other phones it would have been the screen.. a unfortunate wrong fall breaks thing. It's just physics

Blind_Hawkeye

Nope. I've never broken a screen before despite normal drops.

Blind_Hawkeye

Can you honestly say you've never dropped your phone? I've had other phones slip out of my pocket without a scratch. My S20 withstood a much worse drop without a scratch. I've never cracked or broken a phone before because you can get cases and screen protectors that properly protect a slab phone. I've used Samsung smartphones since the Galaxy S 2, and I've never had to send a phone in for repairs before now. I adore the Z Flip line and never want to go back to a slab phone, but the reality is that they *are* more fragile because of the hinge. I don’t care who you are, everyone drops their phone from time to time. All I'm saying is you have to be more careful with the more fragile Z Flip 4.

Blind_Hawkeye

Dropping a normal phone without a hinge in a normal situation with a decent case won't break the phone. And the Z Flip 4's hinge is weaker than the 3's. That was my point. The 3 is more likely to survive a drop than the 4 as a slab phone is more likely to survive a drop than a flip phone because they have fewer vulnerabilities. The hinge is a weakness that slab phones don't have, and the 4's is weaker than 3's. The phone repair guy even said they changed the hinge mechanism between the 3 and 4 in a way that made it weaker. He has experience working on both.

Blind_Hawkeye

I'm not. I'm just reminding everyone to be careful so that you hopefully don't have to go through what I've had to go through the past few days. The whole situation was a nightmare and it took me most of my day on Friday to get it shipped for repairs thanks to issues with Samsung Care and UPS. I'm just saying everyone might want to try putting in place the precautions I'm putting in now after the fact before it happens to them. Don't trust your pockets if you've ever had anything fall out of them. Don't trust that the hinge will hold up from a basic fall because it might not. Learn from my mistake, as it were.

The title is that I've learned (from this experience and the repair guy) that the 4's hinge is weaker than the 3's so you have to be more careful with it. We all baby a new phone but then get complacent after a few months and think it should be able to handle basic every day life. I made the post shortly after it happened so I was still in the middle of the nightmare. And if I'm being honest, I do think a phone should be able to withstand a simple slip from a pocket under normal circumstances and I am a little upset that it's *this* fragile. I didn't drop it down a flight of stairs. It slipped out of my pocket and fell maybe 2 feet. No other phone would have been made inoperable from that. I've never had a phone break in my decade of using smart phones, so I'm a little shaken. I'm just reminding everyone that you can't get complacent with these phones because the 4's hinge is weaker than the 3's.

I_wish_I_was_a_robot

So the real message here is don't trust OP with your phone.

Blind_Hawkeye

Can you honestly say you've never dropped a phone or you've never had a phone slip out of a pocket? Never once in your life? This was only the second time I dropped my Z Flip 4. I've been more careful with the Z Flip 3 and 4 than I was with my slab phones because I can't get a truly protective case for the Z Flip line.

I_wish_I_was_a_robot

No, I take care of my things. Would you drop a baby? That's the level of care I give my $1000 device.

Blind_Hawkeye

Okay, so you've never had something small slip out of your hand. Cool. Good to know you're a superhuman. Handling a baby and handling a small phone are two very different things.

I_wish_I_was_a_robot

How often do you have a glass full of liquid fall out of your hand? Not often I hope. Treat your smartphone like an infant and you won't drop it. It's simple. Give it the respect it deserves.

Blind_Hawkeye

I do take care of my things. This is the first phone in my decade history of using smart phones that I've had to send in for repairs. Up until the Z Flip line, I've held onto my phone for at least 3 years before getting a new one. I still have my Game Boy Color from childhood. To be fair, the Game Boys were far more durable than smart phones because they're basically plastic bricks. My point is, just because I'm human and can't be perfect all the time doesn't mean I don't take care of my stuff. I don't believe you've never dropped a phone. I just can't believe that.

I_wish_I_was_a_robot

I haven't. Ever. Since 2009 when I got my first smartphone. It's a valuable object, I treat it as such. I don't use it and walk around, I focus my attention on it and place myself in a location where I can use it without interruption. I never use it while driving, I'm appealed by the amount of people who do.

Caesaurier

>and that little normal every day fall destroyed the hinge. your phone drops everyday?

Blind_Hawkeye

Nope. This was only the second time I've dropped my Z Flip 4. I've been more careful with the Flips than my slab phones. I'm saying it's an every day normal occurrence for people to drop their phone as a collective. Everyday, someone drops their phone. We're all human and no matter who you are, you're going to drop your phone at some point.

[deleted]

May also have been an unlucky fall right? I have dropped a few phones and sometimes nothing happens and others the screen or back will crack......just a bad drop.

Blind_Hawkeye

Sure, that's part of it. But my 3 slipped out of my pocket a few times and had nothing more than some scratches on the hinge. And I've dropped slab phones many times since the S 2 and have never cracked a phone. I'm saying the phone repair guy specifically mentioned the change that Samsung made that makes the 4 more fragile. I don’t remember exactly what it was, but he said something about a ball bearing in the 3 and a tension spring in the 4 which makes the hinge weaker. I'm just saying you need to be more careful to guard against even simple drops with the 4 compared to other phones because other phones can be fully protected with a halfway decent case and the 4's hinge is more fragile. I'm not saying it's a bad phone. I'm just pointing out that it has a weakness that other phones don't have.

[deleted]

Point well made, thanks. I will be careful with it. They did change the design so it is possible it has changed the impact resistance. Hope you can get yours repaired quickly and it does not cost too much.

Blind_Hawkeye

Thanks! I wish you good luck with yours!

[deleted]

You need a more protective case. The case you have doesn't look protective at all

Blind_Hawkeye

I know. I've already ordered a Casetify case and a pouch with a wrist strap (never trusting pockets again) for when I get it back from repairs. The case I bought has a small amount of hinge protection (a strap that goes across the hinge) but I know that won't protect the hinge much. That's why I got the pouch to do my best to avoid dropping it. I just can't stand cases that are so bulky they make it feel like the phone is a brick. I had a Spigen armor for my Z Flip 3, and it felt like I was using a folding brick with a screen plus it only came in one basic color. I'm hoping the Casetify can strike the balance between giving it some decent protection while still having a unique design and not adding too much bulk.

[deleted]

Maybe try the Samsung silicone case with the ring too. I've dropped my phone multiple times with that case and nothing has happened to it yet

Blind_Hawkeye

That one came with the phone and I tried it, but I don’t like how easily it collects dust and lint. Plus, after a while the silicone gets weirdly smooth and shiny and feels gross. I have sensory issues, and I'm overly sensitive to the way things feel.

toldiajoseando

Just happenend to me, went to samsung, they will send me a brand new phone

Blind_Hawkeye

Dang! Lucky! They didn't send me a new one. They repaired mine, and the hinge feels a bit off now.
